Take-Two CEO Says Former Rockstar Developers Still Haven't Matched GTA's Success

What Did the CEO Say?

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick made some very bold comments at the TD Cowen 54th Annual Technology, Media and Telecom conference. When asked whether AI could help competitors catch up to GTA, Zelnick was direct: "The folks at Rockstar seem to be able to make these massive hits, and lots of other people have tried, lots and lots, including former Rockstar employees. And so far, they haven't been able to do so." He added that it does not mean they cannot in the future — but the message was clear.

The MindsEye Disaster

This comment is almost certainly aimed at Leslie Benzies, the former Rockstar North President who founded Build A Rocket Boy and released MindsEye — a single-player cinematic action game that was directly compared to GTA. MindsEye launched and crashed almost immediately, failing to make any significant dent in the gaming world. Meanwhile Rockstar quietly continues to sell GTA 5 at 5 million copies per quarter, 13 years after its release. The contrast could not be more brutal.

Why Nobody Can Copy Rockstar

Zelnick's point about AI is interesting. He says AI is just a tool and it is available to everyone — meaning it does not give anyone a special advantage over Rockstar. The magic of GTA is not in the technology. It is in the culture, the people, and the 25-plus years of building a brand that gamers trust completely. Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar who left in 2020, is now reportedly working on a new AAA open world story-driven game. That will be the real test of whether the genius was the studio or the individual.

What This Means for Indian GTA Fans

For Indian gamers this is actually great news. It means GTA 6 has no real competition on the horizon. There is no rival game coming that could distract from the November 19, 2026 launch. Rockstar has the market completely to themselves and they know it. GTA 6 is going to be the only game anyone talks about this holiday season — and that hype benefits everyone who follows GTA news, including readers of this site.

My Take

Zelnick is not wrong. Leaving Rockstar clearly does not mean you take the secret sauce with you. MindsEye proved that. The GTA formula is something built over decades by hundreds of people working together — you cannot just rebuild that from scratch. November 19 cannot come soon enough.
