GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Locks Shops, Missions and Locations Behind a $100 Paywall — Fans Call It a Red Flag

The Controversy Nobody Saw Coming

When Rockstar confirmed GTA 6 would cost $79.99, most fans exhaled with relief. The price was reasonable. The Standard Edition included the full story. Everyone could play. Then the full Ultimate Edition details dropped — and the community's mood changed very quickly. For the first time in GTA history, Rockstar is locking actual in-game locations behind a premium edition paywall. Not just cosmetic items. Entire shops. Missions. And a gang compound.

Every Shop Locked Behind the $100 Ultimate Edition

Here is exactly what Standard Edition players at $79.99 cannot access. Rideout Customs — a vehicle modification shop where you can turn regular cars into donk builds with oversized rims and detailed interiors. One-Eyed Willie's — another vehicle mod shop for off-road builds and cosmetic upgrades. Sara's Unisex Salon — exclusive hairstyles for both Jason and Lucia, including facial hair options for Jason. Stock 305 — a clothing store selling exclusive streetwear in Stockyard. Electric Fang Tattoo — over 50 exclusive signature tattoos for both protagonists. Additionally, two side missions and access to a gang compound are locked to Ultimate Edition buyers only.

Why This Is Different From Every Previous GTA Edition

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both had special editions with extra content — but that content always came as items delivered to your inventory. A few extra cars, a weapon, some outfits. None of those games locked entire physical locations on the map behind a paywall. A Standard Edition GTA 5 player never had to walk past a locked door they could not enter. GTA 6 Standard Edition players will walk past Rideout Customs and Sara's Salon and be prompted to upgrade. For a single-player game, that is a fundamentally different and more aggressive approach to monetisation than anything the franchise has done before.

The Partial Defense — You Can Upgrade Later

Rockstar has confirmed the Ultimate Edition upgrade will be available to purchase at any time after launch, so Standard Edition players are not permanently locked out. The $20 difference between editions can be paid any time. Forbes writer Paul Tassi also argued the backlash may be partly overblown — regular hair salons, car shops, and tattoo parlors will almost certainly exist across the whole map for Standard Edition players, and these locked shops are simply where the Ultimate Edition's specific cosmetic items are delivered rather than blocking entire game systems. Multiple hairdressers and mod shops have already been confirmed across Leonida.

What This Means for Indian GTA Fans

For Indian players deciding between the Standard Edition at approximately ₹5,999 and the Ultimate Edition at approximately ₹7,499, the ₹1,500 difference now comes with a clearer cost-benefit calculation. If extensive character customization — hairstyles, tattoos, streetwear, donk vehicles — matters to you, the Ultimate Edition is the better value. If you primarily care about the story, the Standard Edition gives you the complete campaign with nothing locked. The practical advice: start with Standard if budget is a concern, and upgrade later once you know whether the locked shops matter to your playstyle.

My Take

I understand the argument that these are "just cosmetics" delivered through shops rather than menu items. But the visual reality of a Standard Edition player walking past a locked door in the game world and being told to pay more feels wrong for a single-player AAA title at this price point. Rockstar has earned enormous goodwill over 13 years of waiting. Using that goodwill to normalize locked in-game locations in a paid single-player game sets a precedent I hope they reconsider. The ₹1,500 difference is not huge — but the principle matters.
